Sailing

The 'Sailing' CD is a collection of songs that emerged out of the different Main Lessons in our second grade. 'Sailing' is a song that goes along with the stories I told the class for the whole of first grade. Often on our Friday beach walks, we've encountered dolphins playing close to the shore, the inspiration for the dolphin song. 'The King of Ireland's Son' is a wonderful second grade-appropriate book by Padraic Colum, and was the inspiration for the song of the same name. From our animal fable block, the  lion song  emerged. At the end of the school year, The Dandelion Collective produced a CD of children's songs, 'Animal Tracks,'  to support a local charity. The violin player in the Dandelion Collective heard from one of the second-graders that his class had some original songs, and so they came to record one and included it on their 'Animal Tracks' CD. Following that, they recorded our own CD, 'Sailing'  so that we would have a record of what we'd done and sung that year!

The Lyrics:

African Savannah

High on the hill sits the King of the Beasts
Waiting for his feast.
Across the savannah, running wild
A herd of Wildebeast

Run Lion Run (Am)
Into the setting sun
Golden eyes ablaze
You vanish in the haze.

Down on the ground
Creeping low
Watch those Jackals go
Taking the day in their stride
Waiting for the night,
Call Jackals call
Listen to your song
It’s such a mournful tune
You’re singing to the Moon

Stars high above
Ground below

King of Ireland’s Son

King’s son what have you done
Fedelma has gone while you slept

King’s son what have you done
Fedelma has gone while you slept

She’s gone with the King of the Land of the Mist
Now you must seek her wherever you wist
A brave steed to carry him whither he wist
And the green ground under him

King’s son, look at the ring
Fedelma has given you hers

King’s son, look at the ring
Fedelma has given you hers

She’s gone with the King of the Land of the Mist
Now you must find her for that is her wish
Bring her back from the land of the mist.

So off he set, with his hound at his heels
His hawk at his wrist
A brave steed to carry him
Whiter he wist
And the blue sky over him.

Raindrops

Slowly, falling down
Raindrops tumbling to the ground
Coming from their mother cloud
Quicker now they’re all around

Rushing to the rivers
On a journey to the sea
Where many raindrops have gathered
To splash all over me.

After waiting underground
Seedlings sprout, they hear the sound
Pitter patter all around
Wakes them up, their joy abounds

Reaching for the sunlight
They feel like they can fly
And father sun he smiles on them

Sailing

We are sailing across the sea
What will we find?
Will we find a sea monster
With his mouth open wide?
Or will we find a mermaid
Lying in the sun
Combing her golden hair
With a wish for everyone.

Chorus:
Our boat is big and strong
Our sails are tall and brave
She will take us home again
Riding every wave.

We are sailing across the sea
What will we find?
Will we meet a hurricane
So dark and fierce and wild?
Or will we find a treasure
Island in the sun
With hidden pots of gold
Enough for everyone?

Our boat is big and strong
Our sails are tall and brave
She will take us home again

Dolphin

In the blue I see you mister Dolphin
In the sea, you are free
And I pray mister Dolphin
You will always be that way,
Every night and day,
Mister dolphin.

May you always be a creature swimming free
Oh mister Dolphin.

In the night, there’s a light, mister Dolphin
It’s the moon on a dune
Where I stand mister Dolphin
Watching you in the blue
May you always be free mister Dolphin
